The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don’t go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.
Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill
where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.
Don’t go back to sleep.

Rumi

I spent a good part of my adult life waiting; waiting for support, guidance, improvements, help, or relief. I’ve waited for my husband to read my mind, my kids to do chores I haven’t asked them to do, and my friends to call me out of the blue. I’ve waited for my sister to help me with the burden of caregiving to my mom. I’ve waited to be invited to sing, speak, and teach. I’ve waited to be appreciated, recognized, and acknowledged.

I’ve done a lot of waiting.

And I used to believe this was the way things were done.

Then one day I met this amazing woman named Marja. And, a few years later, Marja had to have knee surgery. And she did the most surprising thing; she asked for help and support, and from me, specifically, she asked for lemons and books to read.

It was an amazing moment, because I’d wanted to be of service, but didn’t know how, specifically. She already had people bring her food – and I’m not the greatest cook in the kitchen. But she asked me for something that I was perfectly capable of doing – and happy to do!

The Universe is responsive. When we take an action, there’s always a response to our action.

And sometimes to get what we want, or need, we have to take an action – and that action may be to ASK someone for what we need.

I still have a hard time asking for help – and even when I’m perfectly comfortable asking the Universe for help, it feels strange and awkward when I need to ask another person to come to my aid.

I believe most people want to be helpful if they know how they can be helpful;
someone may not think to offer help simply because they have no idea that we need anything.

When we ask for what we really want, we create an opportunity for connection. It’s true, not everyone will want to jump to our aid. In fact, in my own life, I’ve known people who have gone to great lengths to not have to be involved LOL. However, if we never ask, we never set anything in motion to change in our own life.

Asking sets things in motion, and opens the way to receive. Remember, things won’t change until something moves.
