In July of 1947 an event occurred just outside of Roswell, New Mexico, that changed forever our views regarding the possibility of contact with extraterrestrial beings. An unidentified space craft crashed on Foster Ranch, just 75 miles north of the town of Roswell.

With this event there came a flurry of interest in UFOs. Hollywood took this interest and brought it to the level of obsession in the early 1950s when it released sci-fi movies like “It Came From Outer Space,” “The Day The Earth Stood Still” and “War of the Worlds.”

There have since been thousands of reported UFO sightings, and even people claiming to have been abducted by these visitors from space.

These abductions have raised the question of just how long have UFOs been visiting our planet? Most UFO-ologists agree that this is not a new phenomena, and that there is evidence that UFOs have been visiting Earth for thousands of years. In Australia there are cave paintings estimated to be 5,000 years old that seem to depict space travelers.

If aliens have been visiting our planet for the last 5,000 years, what are the chances that they are the ancient gods and goddesses of legend, and not simply figments of Hollywood’s imagination?

What if these visitors from the stars just appeared to be as gods because of their advanced technology?

In Native American legends there are stories of mortals going to live among the stars with the star people. Among the people of northern Europe it is believed that the most noble of the faery folk, known as the gentry, originally came from the stars. The angels have been associated with the different planets, and the fallen angels fell from the heavens. The bible even has a few questionable occurrences that could be compared to alien contact. In the book of Exodus, it was a pillar of cloud that led the people out of Egypt. By night this pillar was fire. In modern UFO folklore UFOs frequently appear as surrounded by clouds by day and as fire by night.

However, the aliens seem to fall into only two categories, those who want to help our planet, and those who wish to harm us. Whereas the gods and goddesses fall under hundreds of archetypal models that have similar characteristics in every culture. Where the gods and goddesses seem to define the hidden aspects that represent our own inner selves, travelers from space seem to be just that… travelers. They may be curious, they may be here to help, or they may just be on vacation. But they are not quite representing love the way the goddess Aphrodite might, or wisdom the way Sophia would.

Are aliens simply part of the natural evolution of our belief in the supernatural, or a product of too much television? Perhaps they are simply like us (with more technology of course) and have inquisitive natures.

We may never know for sure whether our ancient gods and goddesses are actually space travelers until an alien space craft lands on the White House lawn. Of course, there are those true believers who believe this event has already taken place, so perhaps the question of “do aliens exist” can only be answered through our own personal experiences and investigations.

For now anyway!
